INDIA NEPAL RELATIONS WORSE PHASE

  • Nepal Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali on Sunday told The Hindu that the country will intensify security along the border with India.
  • His remark came two days after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a new route for the Kailash Mansarovar yatra via the Lipulekh pass, which Nepal claims is part of its territory.

WHAT NEPAL FM SAID

  • “The number of border posts on our side is less when compared to the security arrangement on the Indian side,” he told the newspaper. “We have approximately 120 border posts at present and are planning to increase the numbers in the future.”

DETAILS

  • Gyawali said that the link road inaugurated by India has been built in the territory that historically belongs to Nepal. “As per the Sugauli Treaty of 1816, the territory to the east of the Mahakali river belongs to Nepal and both sides had agreed way back in 1988 to follow the principle of ‘fixed border’ in determining the border of Nepal,” he said.

INDIA–NEPAL BORDER

  • The India–Nepal Border, is an open international border running between India and Nepal. The 1,690 km (1,050.12 mi) long border includes the Himalayan territories as well as Indo-Gangetic Plain.

BORDER SECURITY

  • The Indian side of the border is regulated by Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) along with local police. The Nepali side of the border is regulated by the Armed Police Force (APF) along with the local branch of Nepal Police. Often SSB (India) and APF (Nepal) perform joint patrols on the border.

BORDER DISPUTES

  • There are two existing territorial disputes between India and Nepal, over the Kalapani territory, a 400 square kilometres (150 sq mi) area at the India-Nepal-China border in North West Nepal, and Susta a 140 square kilometres (54 sq mi) area in Southern Nepal.

KALAPANI TERRITORY

  • The Kalapani territory is an area disputed between India and Nepal, but under Indian administration as part of Pithoragarh district in the Uttarakhand state.
  • According to Nepal’s claim, it lies in Darchula district, Sudurpashchim Pradesh.

SUSTA TERRITORY

  • Susta territory is an area under territorial dispute currently in Tribenisusta, Lumbini Zone, Nepal and near Nichlaul, Uttar Pradesh, India. The area under dispute totals over 14,000 hectares (140 km2) and is being controlled by India.
