Some unknown facts about the BRO
- Headed by a Lieutenant General from the Army’s Corps of Engineers (currently Lt Gen Harpal Singh), the BRO comprises around 1,250 officers, 32,000 men and upward of 70,000 labour force.
- BRO runs 18 projects bearing exotic names like Arunank, Brahmank, Chetak, Himank, Pushpak, Sampark, Udayak, Vartak and Vijayak.
- The BRO is responsible for the construction and maintenance of 60,000 km of roads, 734 bridges, 19 airfields and several tunnels through some of the most inhospitable areas, stretching from Ladakh to Mizoram.
Financial Push for BRO
- According to the ministry, the annual budget of the BRO ranged from ₹3,300 crore to ₹4,600 crore during 2008 to 2016.
- However, the allocation was hiked to ₹8,050 crore in 2019-2020.
- The budget for the BRO for 2020-2021 is likely to be ₹11,800 crore, the ministry said, adding the higher allocation will expedite the construction of strategic roads, bridges and tunnels along our northern borders.
World’s Longest Highway Tunnel
- The 9.02 km long tunnel connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley throughout the year.
- It reduces the road distance by 46 km between Manali and Leh and the time by about four to five hours.
- Atal Tunnel has been designed for traffic density of 3000 cars per day and 1,500 trucks per day with max speed of 80 km/hr.
- Union defence minister Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone of the Nechiphu Tunnel on the Balipara-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) road in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.
- The 450m-long tunnel, which will bypass the existing road, will be Dshaped and comprise two lanes of 3.5m width each.
- Made under the Project Sampark of the BRO. Four bridges were constructed on the Akhnoor-Pallanwala road in Akhnoor (Jammu District), while two bridges were built on the Tarnah Nallah in Kathua district.

- Defence ministry data showed the BRO is working on the construction of 102 major permanent bridges, measuring 7,500 metres, in the border areas of the country in this financial year.
- Of the 102, 54 bridges have already been completed, while the remaining 48 will be completed in this fiscal year.
