NEPAL, CHINA SIGN 8 DEALS WORTH $2.24 BILLION CHINA, NEPAL

• An agreement was signed between the Investment Board of Government of Nepal and Huaxin Cement Narayani Pvt Ltd under which the Chinese firm has pledged Rs 14.4 billion (USD 130 million) of FDI to generate 3,000 metric tonnes of cement per day.
• Another MoU was signed to prepare a detailed feasibility study on Eastern Tarai Irrigation System in the Biring, Kamala and Kankai rivers.
• The two countries agreed on establishing the highland food park for varieties of fruits and vegetables with an investment of over USD 46 million.

CHINA, NEPAL

• They also agreed for the development of 164 MW Nepal Kaligandaki Gorge Hydro power Project which would be developed in BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, Transfer) model
• Furthermore, an agreement was signed for the construction of 40.27 MW Siuri Nyadi Hydropower Plant Project in EPCF (Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Finance) model

PASHMINA

•An agreement between Nepal Pashmina Industries Association and One Belt One Road International Trade Platform of CIC Mutual Trade Investment Company was signed for the sale of Nepali pashmina in China.
•The purchase order from China would be between 200,000 to 500,000 pieces every year.

PASHMINA

• Pashmina is a fine type of Kashmiri wool. The textiles made from it were first woven in Kashmir
• Pashmina products are made only in Kashmir and more recently in Nepal where the industry has seen a surge in production.

NEPAL’S ISSUES

• The Rs 1,315 billion budget has set an ambitious target of eight per cent economic growth with focus on the development of physical infrastructure, energy, tourism and agriculture and resources provided for newly created provincial Governments which are facing enormous
teething troubles. It plans to raise the power generation from the present 830 MW to 15,000 MW by 2035.
• Despite the political stability targets of growth, prosperity and happiness will not be easy to achieve in a country where imports are 85 per cent and exports 15 per cent and 1500 youth leave the country every day due to joblessness.

WHAT NEPAL WANTS FROM INDIA?

•Nepal owes India more than two billion rupees for arms and equipment purchased. It wants India to write off the amount, change the arms supply mechanism from 60:40 grant and payment to annual military aid.
