Mairang to Become 12th District of Meghalaya – Free PDF Download

• Meghalaya will get its 12th district-Mairang-and the district will become functional before 2021 Independence Day, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed.

Demand for a new district

• Mairang is at the bottom when it comes to sustainable development goals.
• West Khasi Hills has been neglected a lot in terms of economic standard of the people, the sustainable development goals and to raise livelihood of the people, the only way to do is to bring administration closer to the people.
• The main purpose of doing this is to push the living standard of the people in Mairang and other parts of West Khasi Hills and therefore the need to create a new district is very justified.

History

• It is predominantly inhabited by the Khasis, the Jaintias, and the Garo tribal communities.

• The Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills, which form the central and eastern part of Meghalaya, is an imposing plateau with rolling grasslands, hills and river valleys.
• The southern face of the plateau is marked by deep gorges and abrupt slopes, at the foot of which, a narrow strip of plain land runs along the international border with Bangladesh.
• Meghalaya, with an average annual rainfall of 1,150 cm, receives the highest amount of rainfall in the country.
• Cherrapunji was declared the wettest land-based locationon Earth after it receive an average of 11,872 mm in annual rainfall  — more than 10 times India’s national average (of 1,083 mm).
  • Cherrapunji, known to locals as Sohra, is located in the East Khasi Hills in the Indian state of Meghalaya.

Handicraft

• The popular handicrafts of the Garo hills district are artistic weaving, cane and bamboo work including poker work (in which designs are burnt into the bamboo with a red-hot pointed rod), and wood carving.
• Carpet and silk weaving and the making of musical instruments, jewellery and pineapple fibre articles are among its minor craft.

Festivals

• A five day long religious festival of the Khasis, Ka Pemblang Nongrem dance is popularly known as Nongrem dance is held annually at village, Smit,11km from Shillong.

• Shad Sukmysieumanother festival of the Khasis is held at Shillong during the second week of April.
• Wangla festivalis observed for a week to honour Saljong (Sun-god) of the Garos during October-November.

Economy

• Meghalaya is basically an agrarian state, in which about 80 per cent of the population depend primarily on agriculture for their livelihood.
• The State has a vast potential for developing horticulture due to agro-climatic variations, which offer much scope for cultivation of temperate, sub-tropical and tropical fruits and vegetables.
