Demand for a new district

  • Mairang is at the bottom when it comes to sustainable development goals.
  • West Khasi Hills has been neglected a lot in terms of economic standard of the people, the sustainable development goals and to raise livelihood of the people, the only way to do is to bring administration closer to the people.
  • The main purpose of doing this is to push the living standard of the people in Mairang and other parts of West Khasi Hills and therefore the need to create a new district is very justified.

  • Meghalaya is located in the northeast of India.

Handicraft

  • The popular handicrafts of the Garo hills district are artistic weaving, cane and bamboo work including poker work (in which designs are burnt into the bamboo with a red-hot pointed rod), and wood carving.
  • Carpet and silk weaving and the making of musical instruments, jewellery and pineapple fibre articles are among its minor craft.

Festivals

  • A five day long religious festival of the Khasis, Ka Pemblang Nongrem dance is popularly known as Nongrem dance is held annually at village, Smit,11km from Shillong.

  • Shad Sukmysieumanother festival of the Khasis is held at Shillong during the second week of April.
  • Wangla festivalis observed for a week to honour Saljong (Sun-god) of the Garos during October-November.

Economy

  • Meghalaya is basically an agrarian state, in which about 80 per cent of the population depend primarily on agriculture for their livelihood.
