  • On August 20 2020, Navalny fell ill on a flight to Moscow.
    • His flight made an emergency landing at Omsk where he was initially hospitalised and treated. At the request of his wife, he was taken to Germany where he completed his treatment and had a miraculous recovery.
  • Navalny accused Vladimir Putin of being responsible poisoning him with nerve agent.
  • The EU and UK imposed sanctions on Russian officials for this.
  • On 17 January 2021, Navalny returned to Russia, where he was immediately detained.
    • The charges include an old case in which he received a suspended sentence and a new case of fraudulent use of public money.

Aftermath of Arrest

  • There were widespread protests demanding Navalny’s release.
  • Every major city, from the Pacific coast to the Baltic Sea saw protests where thousands were arrested.

  • Alexei Anatolievich Navalny is a Russian opposition leader and anti-corruption activist.
  • He came to international prominence by organizing demonstrations and running for office against president Vladimir Putin. He advocated reforms against corruption in Russia.

  • Navalny’s political career started with the liberal opposition party, Yabloko but later he fell out with them and later co-founded a new political movement “THE PEOPLE”.
  • In 2013, Navalny contested Moscow Mayoral elections against Sergey Sobyanin, a Putin loyalist and lost the elections.
  • In 2018, Navalny refounded “Russia of the Future” party which is yet to be recognized by the Russia’s Ministry of Justice.
  • In 2016, Navalny announced his entry into the presidential race but the Central Electoral Commission barred Navalny from running for president in 2018.
  • He mainly remained an anti corruption activist.

  • In 2018, Navalny invested money in stocks of 5 oil and gas companies to become an activist shareholder.
  • In 2010, Navalny published confidential documents about Transneft’s auditing accusing corruption of $4b.
  • In 2011, Navalny published papers related to a scandalous real estate deal between the Hungarian and Russian governments.
  • In 2012, Navalny accused Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov of corruption.

  • In 2017, Navalny published the investigation “He Is Not Dimon to You”, accusing Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev of corruption.
  • On 19 January 2021, two days after he was detained “A Palace for Putin: The Story of the Biggest Bribe” was published  accusing President Vladimir Putin of using fraudulently obtained funds to build a massive estate for himself.

    • The most pro-government TV anchor, Dmitry Kiselyov, compared Alexei Navalny’s return from Germany to a similar journey in 1917 iconic Bolshevik leader Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov ie: Lenin.

The Big Question

  • Is Navalny even close to Lenin?
    • .!!
    • As we discussed, Navalny has been mostly an anti corruption activist but his popularity has risen manifold after recent incident.
      • Earlier Navalny attracted primarily youth (15-25 yrs) in the demonstrations but in recent protests after his detainment people from various strata and age groups joined the mostly peaceful protest actions.
    • It is probably a reflection of the deep disillusionment with the govt due to problems of 2020 & before..!!
