WHAT JUST HAPPENED?
Allahabad will be called Prayagraj from today Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced days ago that the historic Uttar Pradesh city would become “Prayagraj” as it was what people “wished”.
WHAT IS PRAYAGRAJ EXACTLY?
Located in southern Uttar Pradesh The city is the Judicial capital of Uttar Pradesh with Allahabad High Court being the highest judicial body in the state.

Allahabad High Court, established in 1866, was the fourth High Court established by the British after Madras, Bombay and Calcutta. With a sanctioned strength of 160 judges, over 90 courtrooms including those in its Lucknow Bench, and 22,000 practising advocates in Allahabad alone, Allahabad High Court is currently the country’s largest High Court.
HISTORY
- Called Prayag before the Mughals came in, Allahabad got its name from 16th Century Mughal emperor Akbar who renamed it after founding a fort near the confluence of the Ganga and the Yamuna, known as Sangam.
- He named the fort and its neighbourhood Ilahabad. Later, Akbar’s grandson Shah Jahan renamed the entire city as Allahabad.
IMPORTANCE IN HINDU RELIGION
- The ancient name of the city is Prayag (Sanskrit for “place of sacrifice”), as it is believed to be the spot where Brahma offered his first sacrifice after creating the world.

- UP government renamed Mughalsarai town of Chandauli district as Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Nagar in 2017.
- In 2018, the state government extended its renaming streak to the railway station of Mughalsarai and on August 5, BJP party president Amit Shah inaugurated the Mughalsarai Junction as Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction.
WHAT VALUE DOES IT HOLD?
- In an interview with India TV, Yogi Adityanath said that these places were renamed only after the invasion by Mughals and now is the time to give these places their original identity.
