The Ramsar convention
- The Ramsar Convention is one of the oldest inter-governmental accords signed to preserve the ecological character of wetlands of international importance in the signatory countries.
- The aim of the Ramsar list is to develop and sustain a network of wetlands by maintaining components of their ecosystem and processes.
- The wetlands declared as Ramsar sites are protected under strict guidelines of the convention.
The Ramsar sites
- The Ramsar List is the world’s largest network of protected areas.
- There are over 2,400 Ramsar Sites on the territories of 171 Convention Contracting Parties across the world, covering more than 2.5 million square kilometres.
- With the addition of these ten sites, the total protected wetland area in the country now covers a surface area of 1,067,939 hectares or 10,679 sq km
- The Asan Conservation Reserve is located on the banks of Yamuna river near Dehradun district in Garhwal region of Uttarakhand.
- Area – 4.44 sq km
- Asan Conservation Reserve cleared five out of the nine criteria needed to be declared as a Ramsar site and get identified as a Wetland of International Importance.
Birds
- Asan receives about 40 migratory species –
- Rudy Shelduck, Red Crested Pochard ,
- Common coot, Gadwall, Kingfisher, Indian cormorant,
- Baer’s pochard, Northern pintail, Bar-headed goose.
- Many endangered birds are found here + migratoty birds – make it an ecologically important site.
