The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is an intergovernmental process established in 1996 to foster dialogue and cooperation between Asia and Europe. Presently it comprises 53 partners (as of Oct 2018)
30 European and 21 Asian countries, the European Union and the ASEAN Secretariat ( Jakarta ).

SOME POINTS FOR EXAM
• In November 1994, Singapore and France proposed that an EU-Asia summit meeting is held, to consider how to build a new partnership between the two regions.
• Following Singapore’s proposal, the 1st ASEM Summit (ASEM1) was held in March 1996 in Bangkok, Thailand, which marks the beginning of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).
• Summit is held every 2 years.

• The European Council President Donald TUSK chaired the summit.
• Discussions focused on the theme “Europe and Asia: Global Partners for Global Challenges”.
WHAT INDIA SAID AT THE SUMMIT
Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu represented India in 12 TH ASEM SUMMIT.
Vice President Venkaiah Naidu Terming terrorism as a significant threat to peace and stability, he called for an early conclusion of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism while stressing that peace is the prerequisite for progress and it cannot be achieved without combatting terrorism.
WORLD LEADERS BACKED FREE TRADE.
• European and Asian leaders pledged their support for free trade at a meeting Friday that underscored global trade tensions with US President Donald Trump.
• German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the Asia-Europe Meeting in Brussels would send a signal that “countries are coming together here from Europe and Asia that all want rules-based global trade and are committed to multilateralism.”

between the people of Asia and Europe through intellectual, cultural, and
people-to-people exchanges.
