Battle 2022
History of BSP
- Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is a national political party in India that was formed to represent “BAHUJANS” referring to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes (OBC), along with religious minorities.
- It was founded by Kanshi Ram in 1984. In 2001 Kanshi Ram was succeeded by Mayawati.
Performance of BSP in UP
Rise of BSP in 2007
- The 2007 results saw a great surprise & led to BSP emerge as a sole majority party, the first such party to do so since 1991.
- Mayawati began her fourth term as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and completed the term also..!!
- The majority achieved in large part was due to the BSP’s ability to take away majority of upper castes votes from BJP.
Since 2012
- 2012 Vidhan Sabha elections : 403/80
- 2017 Vidhan Sabha elections : 403/19
- 2014 general elections: BSP was the third-largest national party of India in terms of vote percentage, having 4.2% of the vote across the country.
- But it did not win a single seat..!!!
- 2019 general elections: BSP was part of Mahagathbandhan which won 15 seats out of 80 out of which BSP won 10..!!
Ekala Cholo..!!
But why go alone?
- Checkered alliance history
- Rise of Hindutva & BJP
- To keep BSP voter base intact
- Project & protect itself as strong and aggressive champion of Bahujan
Million Dollar Questions
- Can Mayawati & BSP repeat performance of 2007?
- Can BSP form the government going alone in 2022?
What’s the likelihood?
- Mayawati’s decision of going alone in 2022 is guided by some compulsion and more importantly the need to save her electoral base but it is going to be beneficial for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in UP.
