THEMIS MISSION

  • (c) The Themis mission, comprising five identical probes, aims to gain new insights into the colourful displays in high-latitude skies. In particular, scientists want to understand what triggers a sudden brightening of the lights.
  • THEMIS
  • The Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms

 (THEMIS)

  • mission began in February 2007 Three of the satellites orbit the Earth within the magnetosphere, while two have been moved into orbit around the Moon. Those two were renamed
  •  ARTEMIS for Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence and Electrodynamics of the Moon’s Interaction with the Sun.

SO NASA NAMED THE TWO MISSIONS ON THESE GREEK GODDESSES

THEMIS AND ARTEMIS  ORIGINS

  • Themis – Her symbols are the Scales of Justice, tools used to remain balanced and pragmatic. Themis means “divine law” rather than human ordinance, literally “that which is put in place“ Don’t confuse her with Lady Justice. Lady Justice originates from the personification of Justice in Ancient Roman art known as Iustitia or Justitia after Latin: Iustitia, who is equivalent to the Greek goddesses Themis and Dike.

THEMIS AND ARTEMIS

  • -ORIGINS Artemis, in the ancient Greek religion and myth, is the goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, the Moon, and chastity. Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo

ARTEMIS MISSION LATEST FINDINGS

  • Reiner Gamma Reiner Gamma is a geographical feature of the Moon known as a lunar swirl. It is one of the most visible lunar swirls from Earth, visible from most telescopes. It was originally thought to be a lunar highland, but scientists eventually realized that it cast no shadow on the moon.

REINER GAMMA

  • NASA’S ARTEMIS Research using data from

NASA’s ARTEMIS

  • mission suggests that lunar swirls, like the Reiner Gamma lunar swirl could be the result of solar wind interactions with the Moon’s isolated pockets of the magnetic field.

NOTES

  • Reiner Gamma and the dozens of other swirls on the Moon could simply be a form of “sunburn” created by how solar wind and the magnetic field of the Moon’s crust interact. The surface is exposed to any and all radiation coming its way from space, and the only protection it has is from small magnetic rocks in the moon’s crust and surface. These provide the lunar surface with small and localised pockets of protection from solar wind.

 SOLAR WIND

ARTEMIS MISSION

  • The Moon has no global magnetic field; magnetised rocks near the lunar surface do create small, localised spots of magnetic field. The magnetic fields in some regions are locally acting as this magnetic sunscreen. Under these miniature magnetic umbrellas, the material that makes up the Moon’s surface, called regolith, is shielded from the Sun’s particles. As those particles flow toward the Moon, they are deflected to the areas just around the magnetic bubbles, where chemical reactions with the regolith darken the surface. This creates the distinctive swirls of darker and lighter material.
