EARLY LIFE

  • Chaudhary was born in Himachal and lived in Amritsar and Delhi. She was the first child of Madan Mohan Chaudhary.
  • Chaudhary attended the Government College for Women, Amritsar Later, Kanchan completed her Master of Arts (MA) in English Literature from Indraprastha College, Delhi University.

IPS

  • When she cleared the Civil Services exams, it was clear to her that she would join the Indian Police Services as a path to serving justice.
  • Chaudhary’s career in the Indian Police Services spanned 33 years.She was the second woman (after Kiran Bedi) to become an IPS officer.
  • She was the first woman to be an IPS officer in Uttar Pradesh and was the first woman appointed Deputy General Inspector of Police in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.
  • She was then promoted to be the first woman Inspector General of the Uttar Pradesh Police. She was the first woman to serve as the Additional Director General of Police in Uttaranchal and then was the first woman promoted to be the Director General of Police in the state.

UDAAN

  • She was awarded with President’s Medal for long and meritorious services in 1989 and Rajiv Gandhi Award in 2004 for excellent all round performance and as an outstanding woman achiever.
  • Written and directed by Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya’s younger sister Kavita Chaudhary, who also starred as the protagonist, Udaan was a hugely popular 30-episode series that aired on national broadcaster Doordarshan from 1989 to 1991INSPIRED BY HER LIFE.

LATER

  • She retired as the DGP on October 31, 2007.After retirement, she took a plunge into politics by contesting the 2014 Lok Sabha election on an Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) ticket from Haridwar constituency. However, she could not make it to the lower house of Parliament.
  • Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya was a pioneer in the police force who fought gender bias, and continues to serve as an inspiration for many across the country.
  • Kanchan Chaudhary Bhattacharya, died in Mumbai late on Monday night after a long illness. She was 72.
