WHAT IS A VIRTUAL CONSTELLATION ?
- Virtual Constellation is a set of space and ground segment capabilities operating together in a coordinated manner, in effect a virtual system that overlaps in coverage in order to meet a combined and common set of Earth Observation requirements.
- The Constellation concept builds upon or serves to refocus already existing projects and activities.
THE IDEA
- There are two phases proposed for the Constellation: phase one, comprising a virtual constellation of existing satellites; and phase two, a new satellite constellation.
- It will create a system for the sharing of remote sensing data, meaning the data from each of the member countries’ existing Earth observation satellites will be made available to all the other members.
SITUATION RIGHT NOW
- Currently, only Brazil, Russia, India and China have remote-sensing satellites in the sun-synchronous orbit, and they will provide data to South Africa, which does not have a satellite of its own.
HOW IS THIS IMPORTANT?
- A satellite constellation of this magnitude will send a message around the world that the BRICS countries are ready to cooperate in numerous ways
INDIA IS ALSO WORKING WITH U.S
- Other than working with Russia and China under BRICS constellation system India is also working with U.S.A
- The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission is a joint project between NASA and ISRO to co-develop and launch a dual- frequency synthetic aperture radar on an Earth observation satellite.
NISAR (SATELLITE)
- Launch – date 2022
