Central Vista Project

The Central Vista Redevelopment Project was introduced in order to give Lutyen’s Delhi a new appearance, make it a significant Indian tourist destination, and provide contemporary facilities for the country’s central government. The project was put forth by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in September 2019.

A new Common Central Secretariat and triangular-shaped Parliament building will be constructed as part of this project. This will result in the renovation of the three-kilometre-long Rajpath and the creation of a museum out of the North and South Blocks. This renovation project is anticipated to be finished in 2026 for an estimated total cost of 20,000 crores.

Additionally, raw materials for the building are acquired from various locations in India. Rajasthan’s Dholpur and Jaisalmer are where the granite and sandstone are found. The new Parliament Building’s wooden structures are being designed by craftsmen and artisans in Mumbai using wood that was purchased from Nagpur. The Carpet City in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, is the source of hand-knotted carpets.

What is Central Vista Project?

The Rashtrapati Bhawan, Parliament House, North and South Blocks, India Gate, and National Archives are among the attractions on the 3.2-kilometer-long Central Vista in Delhi. Before the new capital was inaugurated in 1931, all of these famous structures were built. A new parliament building will be built as part of the government’s Central Vista Redevelopment Project, and it will be built next to the current one.

Central Vista Project History & Evolution

The Delhi Town Planning Committee was established in 1912 following King George V’s announcement that India’s capital would move from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Delhi. Planning, creating, and designing notable buildings for the capital was its primary goal.

The Central Vista Complex was designed by Herbert Baker and Edwin Lutyens, two British architects. It included the National Archives, India Gate, North and South Blocks of Parliament House, and Rashtrapati Bhawan.

They collaborated to create the Parliament House structure. In addition, Herbert created the North and South Blocks, while Lutyen created the Rashtrapati Bhavan. All of these buildings had been built before Delhi was designated as the new capital in 1931.

Central Vista Project Delhi Objectives

The Central Vista Redevelopment Project is being put out in order to better public amenities, amenities, parking, and other amenities while also addressing the Parliament’s present and future space requirements.

Plans for the refurbishment project were made in response to worries about fire safety, acoustics, and the condition of the century-old building. A new Capital structure will be finished by July 2022, and a shared Central Secretariat will be operational by March 2024.

After this project is finished, it is anticipated that the parliament would have 900 seats instead of the current 545. The initiative also seeks to make Central Vista more appealing in order to elevate it to the status of a premier travel destination.

By a vote of 2-1, the Supreme Court approved the Central Vista Redevelopment Project on January 5, 2021. Central Vista Project Completion Date

By December 2022, the lavish Central Vista project’s construction of the prime minister’s residence will be complete. The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) briefed a government-appointed expert group, which authorised the idea.

The prime minister’s home would be constructed by December 2022, while the Parliament building would be extended and a new Parliament building would be constructed by November 2022, according to the project’s developer, the CPWD. The Ministry of Environment has already given its consent for the expansion and refurbishment of the current Parliament building, which is a part of the Rs. 13,450 crore Central Vista Redevelopment Project.
