KASHMIR
CHILAI-KALAN
- The traditional 40-day period of harshest winter in Kashmir known in the local parlance as ‘Chillai- Kalan’ began on 21 December 2019, with the upper reaches of valley receiving snowfall.
- Chillai-Kalan period which is known for sub-zero temperatures, frozen lakes and river, will end on 31 January 2020.
ABOUT ‘CHILLAI-KALAN’
- Even after Chillai-Kalan ends, the cold wave, however, continues even after that.Therefore Chillai-Kalan is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) that occurs
- between January 31 and February 19 and a 10-day- long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 2.
DAL LAKE, J&K TO BE DECLARED ECO- SENSITIVE ZONE
- The Jammu and Kashmir Government will set up a 10-member committee that will declare Dal Lake, an Eco-sensitive Zone.The decision is being taken based on the study conducted by the DCI- Dredging Corporation of India
- The Encroachments and pollution has shrunk the lake from its original size of 22 square kilometers to about 10 square kilo meters (according to DCI-Dredging Corporation of India).
- The capacity of the lake has shrunk to 40%
- The water quality has deteriorated due to untreated sewage water and solid waste flowing into the lake
DRASS
- It is the second coldest inhabited place in the world after Siberia and coldest place in India with lowest temperature -60°C on January 09, 1990.
