TAPIR GAO, BJP MP FROM ARUNACHAL EAST
- “If a repeat of Doklam takes place, it will happen in
- Arunachal Pradesh,”said Tapir Gao, BJP MP from Arunachal East, while raising the issue of Chinese encroachment into Indian territory in the Lok Sabha
POINT MADE
- He even requested leaders of all political parties and media to voice protests against the Chinese move as the country has not only encroached upon Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh but also raised objections whenever India’s President, defence minister, home minister or Prime Minister visited the state.
FROM 2013
- The Chinese asserted that they had been patrolling near Plam Plam, situated at a height of more than 14,000 feet, since 2001, but the Indian patrol countered this claim.
WHY SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED?
- The claim made by Arunachal MP of 50-60 square km encroachment is very alarming
- Size comparison
CHINA CLAIMS ENTIRE ARUNACHAL PRADESH
PROBLEMS WE FACE
- Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on February 9(2019) claimed that foreign investments are eluding the sensitive border state owing to objections raised by a neighbour, a reference to China, and urged the central government to address the issue.
POINTS TO NOTE
- Getting funds from ADB and WB is not possible at present due to interference from China
2009 INCIDENT
- In 2009, China protested the inclusion of a water management project in Arunachal, parts of which India’s northern neighbour lays claim to, as part of a $2.9 billion loan that Asian Development Bank (ADB) had promised India. The row forced ADB to introduce a disclaimer in its project documents that, while stating that it has no position on territorial disputes, effectively discourages applicants from pushing for assistance for projects in disputed areas.
WHAT WE OUGHT TO DO
- Invite countries that have similar concerns on China’s territorial ambitions to invest in Arunachal Pradesh
USA AND ARUNACHAL PRADESH
- After US envoy to India Kenneth Juster’s visit to the border area of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, Washington has said that the visit “highlights resolute US support for Indian sovereignty and commitment to local partnerships”.
- India needs U.S to invest in Arunachal Pradesh but it would be challenging.
