China’s Role In Nepal’s Politics – Burning Issues – Free PDF Download

  • It was regarded as “an extraordinary moment for Nepal’s communist movement. “

  • In December 2020, Nepal President Bidya Devi Bhandari at the recommendation of govt. headed by PM K.P. Sharma Oli dissolved the Pratinidhi Sabha, the lower House of Nepalese parliament and declared the dates of the election to the HoR on 30 April and 10 May, 2021.
  • 12 writ petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court to quash the act of dissolving the federal parliament.
  • But nonetheless, this development has given upper hand to KP Sharma Oli and his Political opponents have been knocked off balance.

  • KP Oli-led faction of the NCP expelled Pushpa Kamal Dahal from the party through a disciplinary action.
  • Each of the factions claims to be a legitimate party and, for this, they approached the Election Commission to register the changes in the party structure.
    • Note: Nepal Political Parties Act stipulates that any faction in the party can register as a new party provided it has at least 40 per cent members of the Central Committee and 40 per cent of the Parliamentary Party members on its side.

Interventionist India??

  • India which has always been accused of being interventionist has remained cautious.
  • India treats the recent split of the Nepal communist party and the dissolution of the parliament entirely as Nepal’s internal affairs.

  • China’s Defence Minister, Wei Fenghe, landed in Kathmandu on 28 November 2020 to parley between the two factions.
  • Thereafter, China’s ambassador to Nepal, Hou Yanqui, also tried to parley with influential political leaders along with discussions with the President, Bidya Devi Bhandari.
  • Later, China also sent Guo Yezhou, Vice Minister of the International Department of CPC to Nepal.
    • Guo met with leaders of both the two factions of the NCP, President Bidya Devi Bhandari and even met opposition Nepali Congress leader, Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Interventionist China..!!

  • China does not seem to be comfortable with the way the NCP has been split.
  • China is even not happy with the dates of the forthcoming elections. ie : April-May 2021
  • But why?
    • Whatever be the result, Communist party will be loser.
    • Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and other initiatives in Nepal could see a setback.

What next?

  • Note: The voices in favour of declaring Nepal a Hindu state and restoring the monarchical institution is growing in various parts of Nepal.
