CORONIL
- Yoga guru Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved Ltd on Tuesday launched what they claimed was the first Ayurvedic medicine to cure Covid-19.
- However, the AYUSH Ministry has sought details about the medicine and has directed Patanjali and Ramdev to stop advertising such claims.

- At the launch in Haridwar, Ramdev claimed that ‘Coronil tablet’, ‘Swasari Vati’ and ‘Anu Taila’ had shown “100 per cent favourable results” during clinical trials on Covid-19 patients.
- He claimed that a clinical controlled study was done in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Meerut and other cities. During the trial, he claimed, 69 per cent patients recovered in 3 days, while the recovery rate over a period of seven days was 100 per cent.
RESPONSE
- Taking cognizance of the news, The AYUSH Ministry in a statement said, “Facts of the claim and details of the stated scientific study are not known to the Ministry.”
- The statement says that Patanjali Ayurved Ltd has been asked to provide at the earliest the details of the name and composition of the medicines being claimed will treat Covid-19; the site(s)/hospital(s) where the research study was conducted; protocol, sample size, Institutional Ethics Committee clearance, CTRI registration and results data of the study(ies) and to stop advertising/publicising such claims till the issue is duly examined.
RESPONSE
- The ministry has also requested the Uttarakhand State Licensing Authority to provide copies of the license and product approval details of the Ayurvedic medicines which the company has claimed will treat Covid-19.
- On June 2, the AYUSH Ministry had issued a circular to the principal secretaries of all states to take necessary action “against instances of misleading information, fake claims and misbranding”.
RESPONSE
- The ministry also directed that “a warning may be issued and if not complied in one week time, FIR may be filed in blatant cases of violation”.
- “There is no room for confusion,” the herbal products company said in a tweet.“The licence for the drug was obtained on the basis of the traditional knowledge and experience related to the medicinal virtues of Ashwagandha, Giloy and Tulsi,” Patanjali spokesperson S K Tijarawala said.
RESPONSE
- “The positive results of the clinical trials conducted legally on corona patients were shared,” he added.
- “Manufacture and sale of a medicine is carried out as per the rules laid down by the government and not in accordance with someone’s personal belief or ideology,” it said.
- “Patanjali has complied with all legalities,” it said asking people to refrain from unnecessary commentary on the issue.
RESPONSE
- NIMS Chairman, Dr. B.S. Tomar said, “there was no clinical trial in our hospital of the drug. There was no serious case in the patients we admitted. Only 100 asymptomatic patients were given few Ayurvedic medicines under the sponsorship of Patanjali. But we did not prepare any medicine nor did we know its name.“
- We had not asked for medicine to cure coronavirus but only these ayurvdic immunity boosters. Whoever got these, recovered 35% faster. That is all,” he said.
CHARGES
- The storm surrounding Coronil, and the fact that the company dealing in Ayurvedic and herbal products could be charged under two laws, including The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.
