•In the Rajya Sabha, soon after the passage of Payment
of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill, opposition members
including Congress, AIADMK, TDP and others came into
the well raising slogans on the demands.

• The bill was passed by voice vote during Zero Hour
without discussion.
• The Lok Sabha had already passed the bill last week.
• The Bill will enable the government to enhance the
ceiling of tax free gratuity to 20 lakh rupees
from the existing 10 lakh rupees for employees
falling under the Payment of Gratuity Act.
-• Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar
said it is a very important legislation for
employees, especially women.
•It seeks to notify the period of maternity
leave as part of continuous service and
proposes to empower the government to
notify the gratuity ceiling from time to
time without amending the law.

Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk
Industry approved by the Cabinet aims to
achieve self-sufficiency in silk production by
2022.
• Scheme will help to increase productive
employment from 85 lakh to one crore
people by 2020.
• The scheme, with an outlay of over 2,161
crore rupees, will promote women’s
empowerment and livelihood opportunities
to SC/ST and other weaker sections of the
society.
