 Vice President’s Secretariat

  • Interacting with the Students of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has said
  • All School syllabi in the country should be reduced by fifty percent and Students should learn 50% from their Classrooms and 50% from Playgrounds.
  • You should prepare yourself; equip yourself starting today, so that you will be ready when called upon to be leaders of a resurgent India, he added.
  • Theory + Practical implications both are equally important.
  • The Vice President said that whole examinations should be based on measuring the child’s capacity simply to question the things around him or her.
  • This will encourage young people to never be content with the status quo and help to make change a relatively easy process, he said.
  • The Vice President urged the young students to never let their marks define or restrict them in any way.
  • You are much more than the numbers on your report card, he added.
  • He further said that only half the school time should be spent in classrooms learning, the other half should be spent in playgrounds and in nature.
  • Some of life’s crucial lessons are learnt by the children from playgrounds, such as sportsmanship, empathy and teamwork, he added.
  • Love for the fine arts and interest in literary activities should also be inculcated in children, they teach children the art of living and working together, he added.

AI Revolution

  • The Teamlease Services: estimates that 52-69% of repetitive and predictive roles in sectors such as IT, financial services, manufacturing, transportation and packaging will be exposed to the risk of automation.
  • More than half of generic work profiles in India will face the risk of disruption over the next two years due to automation.
  • However, this may not automatically imply job losses as new high-order jobs will be created simultaneously.
  • In other words, greater adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) will likely see role changes in the workforce that would need higher specialisation and critical thinking.
  • For, unless adequate investments are made on upgrading skill levels, the oncoming AI revolution will certainly lead to largescale job losses.
  • In China, there is a great push for AI education with plans to set up 50 AI colleges and research institutes by 2020 already in motion.
  • Similarly, some German states have introduced coding for high school students while some schools in Estonia are teaching programming to six-year-olds. All of this is in preparation for the future labour market.

  • The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has said that value addition for agricultural production is one of the solutions for improving farmers’ income.
  • He was addressing the inaugural session of the International Conference ‘AFITA/WCCA2018’ on Research Frontiers in Precision Agriculture, jointly organized by Asia-Pacific Federation for Information Technology in Agriculture, International Network for Information Technology in Agriculture and Indian Society for Agricultural Information Technology, in Mumbai today.
  • The Vice President said that farming community needs to diversify and take up allied activities like fisheries, dairy and poultry as well to supplement on-farm incomes.
  • Expressing concern over the increasing urban rural divide, the Vice President said that such divide would consolidate majority population in urban areas only.
  • He suggested developing Smart Villages along with Smart Cities with a greater focus on technological innovations in agriculture.
  • The Vice President said that we need smart farmers who absorb new knowledge and skills.
  • Technology cannot be confined to urban areas and it must spread quickly to the rural population and enable farmers to harness its potential.
  • It must be remembered that, agricultural renaissance can take shape only on a strong digital foundation, he added.
  • He suggested taking the leap forward in agricultural productivity using digital applications and technological innovations, he said.
  • The Vice President opined that adopting state of the art technology can help in sustaining food security and enhanced livelihood opportunities.
  • He said that transformation in agriculture can come not merely from the government cooperation but from a wide range of individuals and institutions such as Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Agriculture research centers and scientists.
  • He stressed the need to transfer knowledge and technology to farmers so that they put it into practice.

 Prime Minister’s Office

  • The Seoul Peace Prize Committee has decided to confer the 2018 Seoul Peace Prize on Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
  • This is in recognition of his dedication to improving international cooperation, raising global economic growth, accelerating the Human Development of the people of India by fostering economic growth in the world’s fastest growing large economy and furthering the development of democracy through anticorruption and social integration efforts.
  • While awarding the 2018 Seoul Peace Prize, the Award Committee recognized Prime Minister Modi’s contributions to the growth of the Indian and global economies, crediting ‘Modinomics’ for reducing social and economic disparity between the rich and the poor.
  • The Committee lauded PM’s initiatives to make the government cleaner through anti-corruption measures and demonetization.
  • The Committee also credited Prime Minister for his contribution towards regional and global peace through a proactive foreign policy with countries around the world under the ‘Modi Doctrine’ and the ‘Act East Policy.’
  • The Seoul Peace Prize was established in 1990 to commemorate the success of the 24th Olympic Games held in Seoul, Republic of Korea – an event in which 160 nations from across the world took part, creating harmony and friendship and a worldwide atmosphere of peace and reconciliation.
  • The Seoul Peace Prize was established to crystallize the Korean people’s yearning for peace on the Korean Peninsula and in the rest of the world.
  • The Seoul Peace Prize has been awarded biennially to those individuals who have made their mark through contributions to the harmony of mankind, reconciliation between nations and to world peace.

 SC

  • The Supreme Court yesterday ruled out sale and registration of BS-IV vehicles from 1st April, 2020.
  • In its order the apex court said, any extension of time in introducing the new emission norms would adversely impact the health of citizens as pollution has reached an alarming and critical level.
  • The court said, there cannot be any compromise on the health of citizens and this has to take precedence over, what it termed, the greed of few automobile manufacturers who unfortunately, want to stretch the timeline to make a little more money.
