- On 17th April 2020, Hubei Province issued
- “Notice on the Correction of the Number of New Coronary Pneumonia Cases Diagnosed and the Number of Diagnosed Deaths in Wuhan“
- The Notice reported 1,290 additional deathsthat had not been previously counted and reported.
- Thus , bringing the total number of deaths in Wuhan
- from 2,579 to 3,869, an increase of 50%.
- The change also pushes China’s nationwide death toll up by nearly 40%
Reasons for sudden revision
- Wuhan’s epidemic prevention and control headquarters cited several reasons for the missed cases-
- The city’s medical staff were overwhelmed in the early days as infections climbed,
- This lead to late reporting, omissions or mis-reporting.
- Many fatal cases were “mistakenly reported” or missed entirely.
- It also cited insufficient testing and treatment facilities, and said some patients died at home and thus their deaths were not properly reported.
- Data from prisons and detentions centres added.
Doubts over Transparency
- There have long been questions about China’s official figures
- China has come under increasing pressure from Western powers led by the United States, which has raised doubts about Chinese transparency and is probing whether the virus actually originated in a Wuhan laboratory.
