EXPRESSWAYS OF INDIA
- Expressways are the highest class of roads in India.
- The majority of the investment required for constructing expressways comes from the Central Government. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are the only states which are investing in building expressways through dedicated expressway corporations.
POINT TO NOTE
- The National Expressways Authority of India (NEAI) operating under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will be in-charge of the construction and maintenance of expressways.
- The National Highways Development Project by the Government of India aims to expand the country’s current expressway network

INDIA MOVING FORWARD, SLOWLY
DELHI–AMRITSAR–KATRA EXPRESSWAY
- Delhi-Amritsar-KatraExpressway is an under-construction 687-kilometre-long(427 mi) 6 to 8 lanes controlled-access expressway
- Which will connect Delhi with Amritsar in Punjab and Katra in Jammu and Kashmir.
THIS EXPRESSWAY
- This Expressway will reduce the current Delhi-Katra distance from 727 km to 588 km or from 4 hours to 6.5 hours to
- 8 hours and Delhi-Amritsar distance to 405 km or from 8 hours to 4 hours.

- Recently, Union minister Jitendra Singh was quoted in a PTI report saying that the project will be completed by the year 2023-24, and when it is operational people will prefer to travel from Katra, well known for Shri Mata VaishnoDevi shrine, to the national capital by road rather than by air or train.

- The Delhi-Katra Expressway will also be beneficial for the development of economic hubs in cities like Jammu and Kathua.
RELIGIOUS TOURISM
- This greenfield alignment will not only provide shortest and alternate express connectivity to Amritsar city but also to other religious centres of Sultanpur Lodhi, GoindwalSahib, KhadoorSahib as well as the recently developed DeraBaba Nanak, KartarpurSahib International Corridor in Punjab, the ministry said.
