What is Depression?
- Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder.
- It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working.
- To be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks.
Signs and Symptoms
- Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood
- Feelings of hopelessness, or pessimism
- Irritability
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities
- Decreased energy or fatigue
- Aches or pains, headaches, cramps.
- Appetite and/or weight changes
- Digestive problems without a clear physical cause and/or that do not ease even with treatment.
- Moving or talking more slowly
- Feeling restless or having trouble sitting still
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
- Difficulty sleeping, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
- Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts
As a student or Exam Aspirant
- Aspirants for various competitive exams face challenges, pressures and anxieties that can cause them to feel overwhelmed.
- They might feel homesick in a new city.
- Often for the first time in their lives, they are living on their own

Diagnosis
- There isn’t a “depression test” a doctor can use to see if you have it, so figuring that out often starts with a thorough history and physical exam.
What is the treatment for depression?
- The treatment depends on the needs of each patient.
- Treatment MAY include
- Medicines (such as antidepressants)
- A type of therapy called psychotherapy
- Psychotherapy, sometimes called talk therapy, is a treatment that involves a talking relationship between a therapist and patient.
How to avoid depression as a student?
- Do NOT shut out everyone for the sake of studies
- Keep in constant touch with family and ‘close’ friends.
