THE ANNOUNCEMENT

TACTICAL MISSILE

• Benefits – Typically, range is less than 300 kilometres Tactical ballistic missiles are usually mobile to ensure survivability and quick deployment, as well as carrying a variety of warheads to target enemy facilities, assembly areas, artillery, and other targets behind the front lines. Strategic Forces Command approval not necessarily needed, unlike in the case of Agni Missiles

 UNDERSTANDING ORIGINS

• Due to limited 150 km range of Prahaar, the Indian Army wanted a new tactical ballistic missile with range of 200 km. The configuration of the new missile called Pranash has been frozen by DRDO with the developmental trials begin from 2021.
• It will be a non-nuclear powered by single-stage solid propellant which will be offered for user trials within two years time. India is looking for exporting the missile to friendly nations as it will come outside the purview of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) which restricts range above 300 km to be exported.

 POSSIBILITY OF EXPORT

• Pragati missile was the export variant of Prahar missile and it had a range of 170 km, but no country ever seemed interested in it It is expected more countries will be interested in the export variant of Pranash
