- Ashwani Kumar, a former Director of the CBI, was found dead at his residence in Shimla late on Wednesday night. He was 69 years old. He is survived by his wife and son.
- According to Shimla SP Mohit Chawla, Mr Kumar died by suicide.
- Sources said he had been depressed for some time.

Ashwani Kumar had a coveted career
- Over the course of a career spanning 37 years, Mr Kumar, a retired IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, served as DGP for the state between 2006 and 2008.
- Ashwani Kumar had started out as a young IPS officer in Himachal where he was, back in 1985, the SP of Shimla district. It was during this assignment that he was selected in the newly-created Special Protection Group responsible for the security of then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
- He was in the SPG from 1985 to 1990 in various capacities including that of Assistant Director in the PMO.
CBI Chief
- He was also appointed Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a two-year period. (2008-10)
- He was the first police officer from the state to head CBI.
- He was in charge of the central agency while it investigated the Aarushi Talwar murder case.
- He also initiated a probe into the alleged Commonwealth Games scam.
- It was under his tenure that a charge sheet in the alleged Sohrabuddin fake encounter case was filed.
- Retired police officer AP Singh, who succeeded Kumar at the CBI, described Kumar’s death “absolutely shocking”.
- “I have worked closely with him as a special director. He was a gentleman. Never lost his temper. I always found him very pleasant, soft spoken; he never ever said a word to anybody in a raised voice,” AP Singh said about his mild-mannered predecessor at the CBI.
Political Career
- Mr Kumar also served as Governor of Nagaland between 2013 and 2014; in that period he was briefly also Governor of Manipur.
- Kumar was the first CBI chief to be appointed to a gubernatorial office.
