A brief bio of Harish Salve

  • Salve is a qualified CA and has a keen interest in taxation.
  • He did his LL.B. from Nagpur University and began his career with JB Dadachandji & Co. in 1980.
  • He was designated as Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court in 1992.
  • He went on to serve as Solicitor General for India from 1999-2002.
  • A Supreme Court lawyer, Salve also appears for India in international arbitration matters.
  • Salve is one of India’s highest-paid and most in-demand Supreme Court senior counsel, particularly in tax matters.
  • He has represented large corporates like Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited, Tata Group, ITC Limited, Vodafone, etc
  •  He also appeared for India in Kulbhushan Jadhav case.
  • He was admitted to the English Bar in 2013 and joined top English barristers’ at Blackstone Chambers
  • The Chambers’ origins are firmly rooted in commercial law.

What is Queen’s counsel ?

  • King’s/Queen’s Counsel is a title, conferred by the Crown, that is recognised by courts.
  • He/she is a lawyer (advocate) who is appointed by the monarch to be one of “Her [His] Majesty’s Counsel learned in the law”
  • The title of QC is awarded to those who have demonstrated particular skill and expertise in the conduct of advocacy.
  • It is similar to the title of ‘Senior Advocate’ in India.

How does one become a QC?

  • Recommendations for the award of Queen’s Counsel are made by the Queen’s Counsel Selection Panel.
  • Senior barristers and solicitors are invited to apply through an open competition, which is held annually.
  • Achievements of past 3 years are considered and an interview takes place.

  • Appointment as QC is a matter of status and prestige. 
  • It catapults barristers to the privileged echelons of the British legal universe.
  • Just about 10% (about 1000) of all barristers in Britain are QCs.

  • 114 names have featured in the list of silk appointments released for 2019 by the UK Ministry of Justice.
