Is hindi our national Language?

National language
- refers to a language that is spoken by a large population of people in a nation, associated with the socio-political or cultural aspect.
Is Hindi our national language?
- NO ,Although the majority of northern and western states speak Hindi, it is not the national language of the country.
- The Constitution of India has not given any language a national status.
- So, India has no national language.
- The Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India contains a list of 22 languages.
- Article 351, a directive order, states that it is the government’s duty to promote the spread of Hindi.
- Article 348(2) of the Constitution and Section 7 of the Official Languages Act, 1963, allow Hindi-speaking states, such as Bihar and Rajasthan, to use Hindi in their respective high courts.
While Hindi is not a national language,
- Article 343(1) of the Indian constitution specifically mentions that Hindi in Devanagari script and English are the official languages in India.
Difference between national and official language
- The national language is any language that is used for
- political, cultural, and social functions.
- The official language is the language that is used for government business, like –
- Hindi language would be used by the Central Government as per Article 343 when communicating with the states of the Hindi Belt.
- English is the Associate official language and the language to be used while communicating with the other states.
- So as per the Constitution of India, Hindi and English are the official languages and not National languages.
