The Kamorta-class corvettes or Project 28 are a class of anti-submarine warfare corvettes currently in service with the Indian Navy.
Built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata, they are the first anti-submarine warfare stealth corvettes to be built in India.
Project 28 was approved in 2003, with construction of the lead ship, INS Kamorta commencing on 12 August 2005.
Three of the four corvettes, INS Kamorta, INS Kadmatt and INS Kiltan were commissioned in 2014, 2016 and 2017 respectively. INS Kavaratti is under construction and slated to be completed by May 2019.
The platform and major internal systems of this class of corvettes are indigenously designed and built. The corvettes are named after the islands in the Lakshadweep archipelago.

The indigenously developed ‘Dhanush’ howitzer artillery guns, an upgraded version based on the design of Swedish Bofors, are set to be inducted soon.
Army breathed life into the ailing artillery unit by signing deals worth Rs 5,000 crore for 145 US-made M-777 guns and Rs 4300 crore for 100 units of K-9 Vajra self-propelled guns from South Korea last year. The induction of Dhanush will further boost it.

Higher range, better accuracy

For instance, the longer barrel length of the Dhanush, along with the use of a ‘Zone-6’ bi-modular charge system, allows it to fire an extended range full-bore base bleed (ERFB-BB) shell to a maximum range of 38.4 kilometres (km) as opposed to just 24 km for the FH-77B. As such, the Dhanush outranges the FH-77B by 9 km or more for all standard shell types and the M-777 by 6- 8 km, if a similar comparison were to be made. Importantly, it also outranges any towed gun or howitzer in the Pakistan Army’s arsenal by a significant margin.
The Dhanush howitzer also has superior fire control and accuracy when compared to the FH-77B due to the incorporation of an automatic gun alignment and positioning system (AGAPS), which uses an enhanced tactical computer (ETC) for onboard ballistic computations, a muzzle velocity radar and an inertial navigation system (INS)-based sighting system capable of receiving GPS updates.
In the case of the FH-77B, ballistic computations and muzzle velocity recordings are done ‘off-board’ at the battery command post level. Each Dhanush unit is also provided with a STAR-V radio, which along with the ETC and a gun display unit make it compatible with the Indian Army’s Shakti Artillery Combat Command & Control System (ACCCS) that automates artillery operations in a network-centric environment.
The use of AGAPS along with electro-hydraulics suited for auto gun laying enables the Dhanush to be aimed at a target much faster than the FH-77B, once targeting data is available. This means that the Dhanush can better utilise enemy gun location data provided by the Swathi Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) and drones used by search and target acquisition (SATA) units of the Artillery Corps. It has been developed by Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), Kolkata based on requirements of Indian Army and manufactured by Jabalpur-based Gun Carriage Factory(GCF)

State-owned Power Finance Corporation (PFC) on Thursday completed the acquisition of majority stake in REC Ltd by transferring Rs 14,500 crore to the government, an official said.
The transaction has helped the government meet its disinvestment target of Rs 80,000 crore for the current financial year.
“The entire consideration of Rs 14,500 crore for acquiring 52.63 per cent equity of the Government of India in REC is paid by PFC through RTGS (real-time gross settlement) mode this morning,” the official told PTI.
The money has been transferred into the government’s account online.
PFC has raised money from Bank of Baroda, Life Insurance Corporation and State Bank of India, among others, to make the payment.
This deal was in pursuance to the in-principle approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for strategic sale of 52.63 per cent of paid-up equity shareholding of REC held by the government to PFC, along with the transfer of management control.
Both PFC and REC are navratna central public sector enterprises with a combined annual revenue of about Rs 50,000 crore and this acquisition is a step towards consolidation of companies operating in the same space.
