Issue
- The leopard attack in Pune’s Mundhwa suburb in which at least five people, including three who were trying to capture it, were injured, adds to the list of conflict events involving the big cat that have become increasingly common over the past several years.
Why do leopards enter areas populated by humans?
- Animals don’t stray — they know where they are; they also have a reason for being in any place.
- With humans around, there is always food — livestock, dogs, garbage dumps.
What should you do if you spot a leopard?
- Conflict between people and wildlife has attained serious dimensions in many regions of the country to the detriment of conservation. Wild animals often stray in villages and farms in and around protected areas and sanctuaries, causing bloody conflicts. And now increasingly we are seeing wild animals wander into urban areas causing human-animal conflicts.
Causes of Man-Animal Conflicts:
- Habitat fragmentation and shrinking of habitat
- Encroachment in the forest lands
- Increased disturbance
- Increase in area under cultivation around wildlife habitats and changed cropping pattern

Mitigation measures of Man- Animal Conflict:
- To control poaching
- To undertake SMC works in the habitat
- To stop monoculture and increase number of edibles miscellaneous species:
- Stop fragmentation of wildlife habitat and wildlife corridors
- Providing LPG to villagers:
