Idukki Dam Kerala Floods | Latest Burning Issue | Free PDF Download

NOTES

  • On 10 August 2018, all five shutters of the Cheruthoni dam were raised for the first time in history with the water level in the dam exceeding the 2400 ft mark.
  • The water level kept rising in Asia’s biggest arch dam even after opening the first sluice gate which lead to the opening of all five gates within a matter of 26 hours. The spill gates sent down 750 cumecs (7.5 lakh litres per second) of water downstream resulting in widespread flooding along the state’s longest river.

IDUKKI DAM

  • The Idukki Dam is a double curvature arch dam constructed across the Periyar River ( The Dam is locally known as Kuravan and Kurathi )
  • It is constructed and owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board. It supports a 780 MW hydroelectric power station in Moolamattom
  • This dam was constructed along with two other dams at Cheruthoni and Kulamavu. Together, the three dams have created an artificial lake that is 60 km² in area

 NOTES

  • The Idukki has a capacity of 2,403 feet. The administration was alarmed when the water levels touched 2,399 feet on Thursday and then ordered the opening of gate to send the flood reservoir’s water down the river Periyar. The water from the Idukki reservoir is used to power 6 generators with a total installed capacity of 780 MW.
  • At least 26 people have died in rain-related incidents in Kerala. The incessant rains caused rivers in the region to swell, urging the authorities to open the shutters of as many as 24 dams in the state so far.

‘OPERATION MADAD AND SAHYOG’

  • The Southern Naval Command at Kochi has rescued scores of people stranded in the flood-hit areas of Kerala as part of the Indian Navy’s “Operation Madad” for the rain and landslideravaged state.
  • The Indian Army also launched a major rescue and relief operation in Kerala.
