The Virtual Summit

  • India & Australia reaffirmed their commitment to the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) which was upgraded in 2020.
  • Both countries committed to holding Annual Summits at PM level to drive closer cooperation in future.
  • India will hold 2023 G20 presidency and both countries will work closely on economic issues of global interests and concerns.

The Virtual Summit

  • In upcoming times, Australia will invest AUD 280 m in areas of clean technologies, space tech & innovation.
  • Both PMs called for early finalization of Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), a full CECA is expected by the end of the year to enhance trade and investment ties and deepen the CSP.
  • India & Australia will work towards early resolution of the issue of taxation of offshore income of Indian firms under the India‑Australia Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA).

  • Multiple MoUs agreed
    1. Renewed Australia India Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism Cooperation
    2. MoU between Khanij Bidesh Ltd & Australia Mining office over Australia critical minerals mining project
    3. LoI regarding migration & mobility partnership agreement
    4. LoI between India and Australia on New and Renewable Energy Technology

  • Focus on Clean Energy
    1. Both PMs welcomed the fourth India-Australia Energy Dialogue held on 15 February 2022.
    2. Australia will provide $2 million to the IEA Clean Energy Transitions Programme to support enhanced IEA‑India activities
    3. Australia also invited India to Sydney Energy Forum on clean energy supply chains in the Indo-Pacific to be held in July 2022

  • Security Cooperation
    1. General Rawat India-Australia Young Defence Officer Exchange Program to be established
    2. Both nations agreed to continue to share information and coordinate on counter-terrorism efforts bilaterally, and in Quad consultations and in multilateral fora.
    3. Both nations also expressed concerns over the developments in Myanmar, Afghanistan & Ukraine.

The Virtual Summit

  • Both India-Australia being members of QUAD committed to advancing the Quad’s positive and ambitious agenda to promote regional stability and prosperity.
  • India & Australia will also work closely on the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.
  • India appreciated the briefing by PM Morrison on the Australia-UK-US (AUKUS) partnership & reiterated Australia’s commitment to not develop nuclear weapons and to uphold the highest standards of non‑proliferation.
