INFORMAL SUMMIT
- India-China Informal Summit at Wuhan
WUHAN
- Wuhan, located on the banks of Central China’s Hubei province, is a commercial centre divided by the Yangtze and Han rivers. It is the most populous city in central China.
- Besides containing many lakes and parks, including expansive, picturesque East Lake, the city also has the famous villa of China’s ruling Communist Party founder Mao Zedong, where he hosted many foreign leaders.
- Any summit there regarded politically significant for 64-year-old Xi as he is regarded as the most powerful leader after Mao.
WHY ARE THESE INFORMAL SUMMITS BEING HELD?
- To resolve major issues between India and China
- Border issue – India claims 43,180 squares Kilometers of Jammu and Kashmir occupied by China including 5180 square kilometers cede to China by Pakistan under a 1963 China-Pakistan boundary Agreement. On the other hand China claims 90,000 square kilometers of territory held by India in Arunachal Pradesh
MAJOR ISSUES BETWEEN INDIA AND CHINA
- Rivers flowing from China to India
- Brahmaputra which originates from Tibet near mansarover is also called YarlungTsangpo in China which then enter into India from Arunachal Pardesh where it is called dihang and then Brahmaputra.
- China is planning to build dams on this river and could divert some water

- Bilateral trade between China and India touched US$89.6 billion in 2017-18
- Trade Deficit against India – 53 billion dollars
- This figure excludes bilateral trade between India & Hong Kong which stands at another US$34 billion.

- They help reduce tensions between the two Asian giants
- It sends an important message to the world about India – China cooperation

WHY TAMIL NADU WAS CHOSEN?
- There are many reasons –
- India sent a message that India being as old a civilisation as China which Beijing needs to be mindful of while dealing with India.

- Apart from arts and architecture, Narasimhavarman-I, one of the few kings who was never defeated in any of the wars, was also good when it came to trading and having partnerships with other countries, especially with the neighbours.
- According to reports, available literature shows that the Pallava Kings had a trade and defence relationship with China, in which the kings agreed to help China in keeping a check on the growth of Tibet as a powerful nation, during those years.
- Bodhidharma, one of the famous Buddhist Monk in China is believed to be the third son of a Pallava king, who travelled from Kanchipuram through Mamallapuram to China in 527 AD.

DEVELOPMENTS DURING INFORMAL SUMMIT
- India and China plan to set up a new mechanism to discuss ways and means to reduce trade deficit ($53 billion), enhance mutual trade, investment and services. This was one of the important understandings reached out by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of the two-day informal summit between the two leaders
DEVELOPMENTS DURING INFORMAL SUMMIT
- The new mechanism will be at an elevated level. From the Chinese side it would be represented by Vice Premier Hu Chunhua and the Indian side will be represented by Finance Minister of India – Nirmala Sitharaman.
TAMIL NADU LINK
- Two leaders agreed on establishment of sisterstate relations between Tamil Nadu and Fujian Province, exploring the possibility of establishing an academy to study links between Mahabalipuram and Fujian province on the lines of the experience between Ajanta and Dunhuang and conducting research on maritime links between China and India in view of our extensive contacts over the centuries.
