MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH IN INDIA JAPAN RELATIONS
- Indo-Japan joint military exercise Dharma Guardian in Mizoram
AIR FORCE EXERCISE
- Indian Air Force (IAF) to carry out a joint Indo-Japan military exercise ‘Shinyuu Maitri’ with Japanese Air Self Defence Force (JASDF) from 17th October – 23rd October 2019, at the Arjan Singh Air Force Station in Panagarh, West Bengal.
2+2 MEETING
- The two countries are planning their first foreign and defense ministerial meeting, dubbed 2+2, in India for late November, hoping to pave the way for an Indian summit next month between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.
ACSA
- On the agenda will be sorting out the terms of an acquisition and cross-servicing agreement, or ACSA, to be used by their armed forces.
- If agreed, India will become the sixth nation with which Japan has inked an ACSA, following the U.S., U.K, France, Canada and Australia.
- Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA).
- This agreement would allow the Indian military and the Japan Self Defense Force (JSDF) to use each other’s bases for logistical support.
HOW JAPAN WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS?
- Japanese navy will get access to Indian naval facilities in the Andaman and Nicobar islands. This will help them keep an eye on the strait of Strait of Malacca that is sensitive to China’s security interests
WHY INDIA WILL NOT BENEFIT MUCH
- India has already signed LEMOA with USA. That gives access to the Guam facility of U.S base
WHY INDIA WILL NOT BENEFIT MUCH
- India and South Korea have concluded a Military Logistics Agreement
- The above agreement would help:
- Assured logistic support when India operates in the Indo-Pacific in the ports of South Korea.
- To extend the reach, presence and sustainability of Indian Navy ships when deployed at great distances
MORE SUCH AGREEMENTS TO COME
- Reciprocal Logistics Support Agreement (RLSA) with Russia
- India and Russia are expected to conclude a mutual logistics agreement and review the setting up of joint ventures for manufacturing spares for Russian defence platforms in India during the visit of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to Moscow from November 5 to 7
