INDIA’S DEEP ENGAGEMENT IN BRICS
- The New Development Bank (NDB), formerly referred to as the BRICS Development Bank, is a multilateral development bank established by the BRICS states (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa).
- Each founding member of the bank has initially subscribed 100,000 shares, in a total of $10 billion, of which 20,000 shares correspond to paid-in capital
ANOTHER BANK WHERE CHINA LEADS AND INDIA HAS INVESTED
- Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank
- The bank was proposed by China in 2013 and the initiative was launched at a ceremony in Beijing in October 2014.
- Seen as a potential rival to the World Bank and IMF.
- S and Japan have criticised this bank and have not joined it
DILEMMA FOR INDIA
- The Indian foreign strategy looks very perplexed as it is set to join the expansion of G7 countries
- It is also looking to join the proposed D-10 group that is designed to keep China out of 5G market
- India is part of the QUAD group.
- Yet India has invested billions in China led banks that counter American hegemony
A DIFFICULT CHOICE TO MAKE FOR INDIA
- The huge factor behind India’s decision on cooperation with BRICS with be Russia
- Relations with Russia have changed quite a bit for India in the last 3-4 years
- Primary reason for that is the sanctions on Russia by U.S and energy deals between Russia and China
