About Human Freedom index

The Human Freedom Index presents the state of human freedom in the world based on a broad measure that encompasses personal, civil, and economic
Human freedom is a social concept that recognizes the dignity of individuals.
Because freedom is inherently valuable and plays a role in human progress, it is worth measuring carefully.
The report is co‐published by the Cato Institute and the Fraser Institute.
The index published here presents a broad measure of human freedom, understood as the absence of coercive constraint.
This index uses 76 distinct indicators of personal and economic freedom in the following areas:

What has happened?

India was ranked 111th out of 162 countries in the Human Freedom Index 2020 report, plummeting 17 spots from its position in the last index.
India registered a score of 6.43, which is lower than the average human freedom rating of 93 for the 162 countries.
Personal freedom in India was given a score of 30 by the report, while economic freedom was rated 6.56.

Top countries

The countries that ranked in the top 10 are New Zealand, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Denmark, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Estonia, and Germany and Sweden.
While Japan ranked 11th, the UK and the US were tied in the 17th place.
At the other end of the spectrum, Syria was ranked the worst, followed by Sudan, Venezuela, Yemen and Iran.

India ranks above neighbours Pakistan (140), Bangladesh (139) and China (129)
But below Bhutan (108), Sri Lanka (94) and Nepal (92).

Freedom & Income

Countries in the top quartile of freedom enjoy a significantly higher average per capita income ($50,340)
Than those in other quartiles; the average per capita income in the least‐free quartile is $7,720.

Freedom & democracy

The HFI also finds a strong relationship between human freedom and democracy.
The findings in the HFI suggest that freedom plays an important role in human well‐being.
They offer opportunities for further research into the complex ways in which freedom influences, and can be influenced by, political regimes, economic development.

India continues to fall in Indexes

The Global Economic Freedom Index 2020 released in September showed India drop 26 spots from 79 to 105.
The World Press Freedom Index, which was released in April, saw India slip two places. India ranked 142 on the index comprising of 180 countries and territories.
