Water crisis in India
The News
- The first edition of the India Young Water Professional Programme was launched virtually in November 2021 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
- More than 100 participants joined the launch of India Young Water Professional Program.
Background
India Young Water Professional Program
- The objectives of the India Young Water Professional Program are to equip the YWPs with the necessary skills, knowledge, behaviours and networks that will better enable them to contribute to the development and management of water resources in India and to address the competency needs and priorities of the water sector in India.
- This programme aims to “prepare future water leaders”.
India Young Water Professional Program
- The IYWP program has been taken up under National Hydrology Project and supported by the Australian Water Partnership.
- This Program will be implemented by Australia India Water Centre (a consortium of Australian and Indian universities).
- A total of 67 applications were received out of which 20 participants have been selected for the first edition of IWYP program (10 men and 10 women) from central and state implementing agencies of the National Hydrology Project.
- Note: The Second edition of IWYP program will be held in second half of 2022.
India Young Water Professional Program
- The objectives of India Young Water Professional Programme are to equip water professionals with the necessary skills, knowledge, behaviours and networks that will better enable them to contribute to the development and management of water resources in India, and to address the competency needs and priorities of the water sector in India.
- The Program aims to achieve its objectives through the 70-20-10 framework:
- experience 70% (learn and develop on the job)
- exposure 20% (learn and develop through others)
- education 10% (learn and develop through formal training)
India Young Water Professional Program
- The duration of the program is 10-12 months.
- The Programme would be broadly in virtual mode except domestic field visits and expected to comprise of lectures and tutorial 6 days a month.
- The participants shall be working on research a real-life ‘Situation Understanding and Improvement Project, significant efforts are required to be put forth by candidates themselves..!!

- In 2015, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) established the Australian Water Partnership (AWP).
- AWP is successfully pioneering YWP Programs in Myanmar and the Pacific and is drawing on these experiences to deliver the new initiatives to others.
- AWP is managing the new Australia-Mekong Water Facility (AMWF) until June 2023 and supported by a $9.86 million grant which offers a direct government-to-government line of engagement between Australia and countries in the Mekong region.

- National Hydrology Project is a Central Sector Scheme launched in 2016.
- It is an initiative of the Ministry of Jal Shakti and is supported by the World Bank.
- NHP aims to improve the extent, reliability and accessibility of water resources information in India. It also aims to strengthen the capacity of targeted water resource management institutions.
