Indian Railways Redesignates Post of Guard as Train Manager

The Indian Railways recently announced its decision to redesignate the post of ‘Train Guard’ as ‘Train Manager’.
भारतीय रेलवे ने हाल ही में ‘ट्रेन गार्ड’ के पद को ‘ट्रेन मैनेजर’ के रूप में फिर से नामित करने के अपने निर्णय की घोषणा की।
The revised designation is more in consonance with their existing duties & responsibilities and will improve the motivation level of Guards now Train Manager.
संशोधित पदनाम उनके मौजूदा कर्तव्यों और जिम्मेदारियों के अनुरूप है और अब ट्रेन प्रबंधक के गार्ड के प्रेरणा स्तर में सुधार करेगा।

It said that the decision was made after a long-pending demand, saying that the existing designation had become outdated.

Concerns were also raised that the term “guard” was misconstrued by the public which assumed they were a guard in a private firm.

Despite the changes in name, there will be no change or hike in salary, methods of recruitment, existing duties and responsibilities, seniority and avenues of promotion.

As per the Railway officials, train manager, would be a dignified designation without any financial implication, so that they can also lead a respectful life in the society.

Some experts, however, said this was one of the ways towards corporatisation.

Once corporatisation of production units completes, they will be autonomous body and will be able to take independent decision and upgrade their technology without waiting for the approval of the Railway Ministry.
