- McMahon line was drawn by British negotiator Henry McMahon in 1913, the line was a consequence of the Shimla Conference between British, Tibetan, and Chinese envoys.
- Following China’s disagreement with the proposed line, Henry McMahon signed the agreement with Tibet privately and kept it a secret from the Chinese delegation.
India-Tibet Complication
- 1950: People’s Liberation Army entered the Tibet & in 1951 Tibetan representatives participated in negotiations in Beijing with the Chinese government.
- 1954: India signed an agreement with China, agreeing to trading terms on what it called the “Tibet region of China”.
- 1959: Dalai Lama flees Tibet and takes refuge in India.
What has been India’s Stated Policy?
- Since 1959, more than a lakh Tibetan refugees are sheltered in India and they have even set up the Tibetan government in exile, which continues to hold elections.
- However, the official Indian policy is that the Dalai Lama is a spiritual leader, and the Tibetan community in India is not allowed to undertake any political activity.
What has been India’s actual Policy?
- Stated official policy suggests that, Tibetans will not be allowed to involve in any political activity however, the Dalai Lama has been invited to many official events, allowed to travel to Arunachal Pradesh etc.
- This has been protested by China Strongly..!!
