IN THE SCENARIO DISCUSSED
All three men – A, B and C get infected with coronavirus
A – Gets infected with Coronavirus and gets sick
B – Gets infected with Coronavirus but is asymptomatic
C – Gets infected with coronavirus but develops antibodies
HOW ANTIBODIES HELP YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM FIGHT A VIRUS
- Viruses are unable to replicate without a host cell, so getting inside our cells is their main purpose. One of the ways our immune system fights them off is by trying to block their entry into the host cells. This is where antibodies act. They help blocking entry into the cell
EXPLANATION
- These antibodies are produced by a type of our white blood cells known as a B cell. These y-shaped antibodies can also act like flags on the virus and signal to other immune cells like macrophages — which are a bit like the garbage collectors of the cell — to get rid of the virus.
ACADEMIC EXPLANATION
- Antibody, also called immunoglobulin, a protective protein produced by the immune system in response to the presence of a foreign substance, called an antigen.
- Antibodies recognize and latch onto antigens in order to remove them from the body.
PLASMA THERAPY
- Imagine a situation where there is a patient that has had COVID-19infection in the past and has successfully recovered from it. Now this person has recovered from his body had produced anti-bodies, the protective anti-bodies
- The procedure is very simple, we basically connect the donor to a separator, the plasma is taken out. We take about 400 ml of plasma from one donor.
WHAT ISRAEL ACCOMPLISHED
- Monoclonal antibodies are man-made proteins that act like natural antibodies and that work by identifying and binding to the virus to destroy it. The antibodies stopped infection in human cells in the lab
POINT TO NOTE
- In the absence of a vaccine and an effective targeted therapy for Covid19, monoclonal therapeutics offers a new therapy modality.
HOW DID ISRAEL MANAGE TO DO THIS RESEARCH SO QUICKLY?
- Israel Institute for Biological Research (IIBR) is a research and development laboratory which works in the fields of biology, chemistry, and environmental sciences in order to provide the State of Israel with scientific response to chemical and biological threats. It is under the jurisdiction of the Prime Minister’s Office and works in close cooperation with government agencies.
