- In yet another significant step towards the development of the planned Satellite Based Quantum Communication (SBQC), scientists from the two premier laboratories of Department of Space (DOS), Space Applications Centre (SAC) and Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), both from the city of Ahmedabad, have jointly demonstrated quantum entanglement based real time Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) over 300m atmospheric channel along with quantum-secure text, image transmission and quantum-assisted two-way video calling.
Background
Quantum Communication
Quantum Communication
- Quantum communication is a field of applied quantum physics closely related to quantum information processing and quantum teleportation.
- Its most interesting application is protecting information channels against eavesdropping by means of quantum cryptography. The most well known and developed application of quantum cryptography is quantum key distribution (QKD).
- QKD describes the use of quantum mechanical effects to perform cryptographic tasks or to break cryptographic systems.
ISRO Quantum Communication
ISRO Quantum Communication
- During the demonstration, ISRO scientists managed to create an atmospheric channel on the ground to enable sharing of quantum-secure text, image transmission and quantum-assisted two-way video calling.
- Scientists have developed various key technologies like high brightness entangled photon source (EPS), BBM92 protocol implementation, NavIC enabled synchronization, polarization compensation techniques & developed a cryptographic application software suite with integrated quantum security.
Where is China?
- China already has a satellite dedicated to quantum information science, Micius, and demonstrated quantum communication in a laboratory over a coiled optical fibre up to 404 kilometres long.
