The News
Who is Participating?
- From India:
- Indigenously built Guided Missile Stealth Destroyer “Kochi” & Guided Missile Frigate Teg, under the command of Rear Admiral Ajay Kochhar of Western Fleet represented the Indian Navy.
- From Japan:
- JMSDF ships Kaga, an Izumo Class Helicopter Carrier and Murasame, a Guided Missile Destroyer, led by Rear Admiral Ikeuchi Izuru represented the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force.
- In addition to ships, P8I Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft, integral helicopters and MiG 29K fighter aircraft also participated in the exercise.
Significance of JIMEX
- Naval cooperation between India and Japan has increased in scope and complexity over years. JIMEX was started in 2012. This was 5th edition of JIMEX.
- JIMEX-21 aimed to develop common understanding of operational procedures and enhance inter-operability through conduct of a multitude of advanced exercises, across the entire spectrum of maritime operations.
- This year Multi-faceted tactical exercises involving weapon firings, cross-deck helicopter operations and complex surface, anti-submarine and air warfare drills were conducted.
Significance of Japan
- Japan is very important partner of India. Both nations collaborate over multitude of platforms including the domain of security.
- Besides JIMEX, India and Japan annually conduct a joint land military exercise called ‘Dharma Guardian’.
- India & Japan also conduct a joint Air Force exercise called ‘Shinyuu Maitri’.
- India and Japan are also involved in a Maritime Exercise called ‘Malabar’ with the USA. (Australia was also included recently.
