Kishan Bharwad Murder Controversy – Free PDF Download

What has happened?

  • Two bike-borne assailants murdered 27-year-old Kishan Bharwad in Dhandhuka area of Gujarat’s Ahmedabad district on January 25.
  • Kishan Bharwad was killed over an“objectionable” Facebook post that allegedly hurt religious sentiments.
  • The Gujarat police have arrested two men.

What is the case?

  • On January 6, Kishan Bharwad had shared a post on Facebook, after which some members of the Muslim community lodged an FIR alleging that it hurt their sentiments.
  • On January 25, two bike-borne men, Shabbir and Imtiaz, allegedly shot Kishan.
  • During the investigation, the Gujarat ATS found that the accused had met Qamar Gani in Mumbai.
  • In the meeting, Qamar Gani had told the accused that if anyone speaks against their religion, that person must be eliminated.
  • This is why investigators believe that the two accused murdered Kishan Bharwad at the direction of Qamar Gani.

  • The Gujarat police have arrested two men – Shabbir (25) and Imtiaz (27) – in connection with Kishan Bharwad’s murder.
  • Apart from the two killers, Gujarat Police has also arrested a cleric, Maulvi Ayyub, from Ahmedabad.
  • Maulvi Ayyub is accused of providing weapons to Shabbir and Intiaz and is also related to Maulana Qamar Gani.
  • Accused Shabbir and Imtiaz were taken for recreation of the crime scene on Saturday.
  • Police have also recovered a gun from the spot, as well as the motorbike used to commit the crime.
  • Meanwhile, Gujarat ATS on Sunday detained Maulana Qamar Gani Usmani from Delhi in connection with the murder of Kishan Bharwad.
  • Qamar Gani Usmani is associated with TFI (Tahreek Farogh-e-Islam). Qamar was also arrested in connection with the Tripura riots last year.

Case handed over to ATS

  • On January 29, the Gujarat government handed over the investigation into the murder of Kishan Bharwad to the Anti-Terrorism Squad.
  • Within 24 hours, the ATS team arrested Qamar Gani in connection with the case.
  • As per ATS, last year Maulana Ayyub and Shabbir had visited Porbandar with an intention to kill one Sajan Odedara over blasphemy.
  • But, they could not succeed in their plan as Sajan was not present there.
  • “Maulana Ayyub had clearly said that if someone insults the Prophet, the only penalty for that person is death”, ATS SP Imtiyaz Sheikh told India Today.
  • Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi had also said in a tweet, “The case of the violent incident of Dhanduka has been handed over to ATS. Gujarat Police is committed to provide justice to the victim’s family”.

  • The involvement of an underworld gang in the murder of Kishan Bharwad murder has come to the surface.
  • From investigations, it has come to be known the murder was planned in Dubai, where one part of an underground gang is running its operations from, while another is in Karachi, sources told CNN-News18.
  • “Bharwad was killed on the instructions of underworld. There are multiple calls by Gani to the person in Dubai.
  • Agencies are working out the motive of killing, after knowing Bharwad was on bail,” said sources.
  • They also said that Gani, through his organisation, allegedly circulated videos of speeches to instigate youth belonging to the minority community to target those who insult Islam.
  • Possible involvement of Pakistan ISI to create tension between two communities during Uttar Pradesh election season cannot be ruled out, added sources.

  • Police in several districts, including Ahmedabad, issued advisory appealing for peace and asked citizens to not pay heed to unsubstantiated rumours creating a rift between communities.
  • The Vishwa Hindu Parishad also issued a statement appealing for peace even as the opposition Congress attacked the state government over its “failure” to provide security to the deceased.
  • Demanding capital punishment for the perpetrators, several right-wing groups held demonstrations in Rajkot, Morbi, Banaskantha, Surendranagar, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Porbandar, Patan, Vadodara and Chhota Udepur. Clashes were reported in Rajkot and Chhota Udepur.
