The news
- Rajasthan forest department has initiated the process to upgrade Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary into a Tiger reserve .
- The Kumbhalgarh WS is spread over Udaipur, Pali and Rajsamand Districts, in the southern Aravallis of Rajasthan
Apt Conditions
- The proposed Kumbhalgarh tiger reserve has habitat, prey base and potential for breeding of tigers.
- The new Tiger reserve will constitute Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary, Todgarh-Raoli Wildlife Sanctuary and adjoining forest areas.
Tropical deciduous forests and grassland.
- Todgarh Raoli Wildlife Sanctuary – 495 km2
- Kumbhalgarh Wildlife Sanctuary – 608 km2
- The area of the proposed reserve is 1280.49 square km, out which 355.25 square km will be the core area.
- These two sanctuaries have sufficient buildings, including forest chowkies, barriers and check posts for effective management.
- Successful example – Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve (MHTR)
Old habitat
- Till 1970, Tigers used to roam naturally and freely in the area.
- The plan is to Re-introduce 5 tigers to the reserve in the initial phase.
- There are 69 tigers in Rajasthan(2018) compared to 32 in the 2006.
Project Tiger
- There are 50 tiger reserves in India which are governed by Project Tiger which is administrated by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
- India is home to 70 percent of tigers in the world.
- 2006 – 1,411 tigers
- 2018 – 2967 tigers
Rajasthan has three tiger reserves –
- Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Sawai Madhopur
- Sariska Tiger Reserve (Alwar)
- Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve (Kota).
Need for Tiger Conservation
- Tigers are at the top of the food chain and are sometimes referred to as “umbrella species” that is their conservation also conserve many other species in the same area.
