Lakhimpur Kheri Violence, 8 Dead – Free PDF Download

 

What has happened?

  • Eight people including four farmers died in violence that broke out in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday after a protest to block UP deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to Banbirpur village.
  • Violence and arson broke out after eight people were feared dead when a jeep allegedly ran over protesting farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday afternoon, police officials said.
  • In a tweet, Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait claimed that the farmers were attacked when they were returning after staging a protest against the Centre’s new farm laws.
  • He also alleged that people in the convoy opened fire.
  • He further claimed that some people died and many were injured in the incident.
  • Tikait said that he was going to Lakhimpur Kheri and would be likely to reach by midnight.

How the violence started?

  • Farmers were staging a sit-in at Benipur village located in Lakhimpur Kheri and sat on protest at a Helipad, where the helicopter of Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Maurya was supposed to be landed.
  • After which it was decided that the Deputy Chief Minister will reach Lakhimpur Kherivia road.

  • A group of unidentified persons allegedly opened fire at the farmers.
  • Some of the farmers were reportedly even run over by a vehicle.
  • Following this, the angry farmers retaliated by setting two SUVs on fire.
  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident called it unfortunate.

Death toll

  • UP DGP Mukul Goel said total 8 persons died in the incident.
  • “Out of the eight, four were farmers and the remaining four were others who were in the vehicles,” he said.
  • The four deceased farmers have been identified as Sukhwinder Singh (20), Satnam Singh (20), Hari Singh (35) and Subba Singh (65).
  • All belong to Bahraich and Kheri districts.

Union minister’s son involved

  • Meanwhile, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha has claimed that one of the farmers was shot dead by MoS Home Ajay Mishra Teni’s son Ashish Mishra.
  • They have demanded a murder case to be filed against Ashish Mishra.
  • However, the Union Minister refuted the allegations saying that his son was not present at the site at the time of the incident.
  • He said he had video evidence to back his claim.
  • “My son wasn’t present at the spot. There were miscreants who attacked workers with sticks and swords.
  • Had my son been there, he wouldn’t have come out alive,“
  • Mr Mishra, the junior Home Minister, was quoted as saying.
  • “My son was present at the venue of the (Deputy Chief Minister’s) event… all through, I was accompanying the deputy chief minister.”

Internet, mobile services suspended

  • Meanwhile, mobile internet services have been suspended in parts of the violence-hit district,
  • Where restrictions under CrPC section 144 — which prohibits assembly of four or more people — have also been imposed, according to officials.
  • Security arrangements have also been beefed up on the Delhi borders. Administrative officers also took stock of the movement site at Ghazipur.

Opposition parties

  • The incident has kicked off a political storm, with opposition leaders alleging violence on farmers.
  • Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was set to reach the District late night, has been put under house arrest.
  • A delegation of the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi party leader Akhilesh Yadav, BKU leader Rakesh Tikait, and Chhatisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi will visit the district on Monday.
