WHY SHOULD MALAYSIAN INTERNAL POLITICS CONCERN INDIA?
- India along with many other countries have been trying to make Pakistan work more on terrorism. In that effort FATF’s Black List can play a constructive role, but Turkey, China and Malaysia have always blocked any attempt to send Pakistan to FATF black list
- Other than that Malaysian Prime Minister (former) has raised Kashmir issue at UN and at various forums with inadequate knowledge
- India changed palm oil importing policy because of Malaysia’s constant interference in India’s internal affairs
UNDERSTANDING MALAYSIAN POLITICS
- 2018 Malaysian general election
- 2018 MALAYSIAN GENERAL ELECTION
- Pakatan Harapan won
PAKATAN HARAPAN
- Mahathir’s party, the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (Bersatu)
- Anwar Ibrahim People’s Justice Party
- These two were the two main parties in the coalition
DIMENSIONS
- It was agreed that Anwar would become prime minister after a while
WHAT HAPPENED NOW
- In late February 2020, Mahathir resigned as Prime Minister.
- Mahathir’s Parti Bersatu and 11 MPs from Anwar’s subsequently withdrew from the Pakatan Harapan coalition, depriving the government of its majority in Parliament.
THE SCENARIO
- A new coalition will need at least 112 MPs – a majority of the 222 seats in Parliament – to form a government.
- Mahathir Mohamad is supposed to enter a wider coalition by replacing the current ruling pact with the support of a majority of lawmakers that includes opposition parties Umno and Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS). (Malaysian Islamic Party)
MALAYSIAN ISLAMIC PARTY
- Political position – Right-wing to far-right
POSSIBILITY
- Mahathir has the chance to come back to power but this time he will probably be more pro-Pakistan and more anti-India because the parties in his coalition will be of the far-right political spectrum
