Man Portable Anti Tank Guided Missile – Free PDF

WHAT JUST HAPPENED

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight tested indigenously developed Man Portable Anti-tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) in Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh. The defence ministry said it was the third series of successful testing of MPATGM which will be used by the Army.

HOW WAS MISSILE LAUNCHED?

  • The missile was launched from a man-portable tripod launcher and the target was mimicking a functional tank.

 WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW Nag (missile)

 VARIANTS

(a) HeliNa (Helicopter-launched Nag) VARIANTS

  1. b) Land version (with mast-mounted missile launcher)

  •  VARIANTS Man Portable (MPATGM) Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile Indian third-generation fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile. It is currently under development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation in partnership with Indian defence contractor VEM Technologies Private Limited.

MPATGM

  • It has a range of about 2.5 km It is fitted with a high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead. The MPATGM is equipped with an advanced Imaging Infrared radar(IIR) seeker with integrated avionics.

DEVELOPMENT

  •  DRDO started work on a man-portable version of the Nag missile in 2005 On 20 December 2017, India cancelled a major deal for acquiring the Israeli Spike (ATGM) in favour of the DRDO MPATGM, after deciding that no transfer of technology was needed for the development of MPATGM.
  • However, India re-authorised the deal in January 2018 during a visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to India. This deal was cancelled again in June 2019 after DRDO promised to deliver the MPATGM by 2021.
  • THE NEED The Indian Army requires around 70,000 ATGMs of various types and around 850 launchers of different types. It is planning to procure third-generation ATGMs with a longer range than that of its existing Milan-2T and Konkurs ATGMs.
