• The seventh edition of the multinational maritime exercise Aman-2021 will be held in Karachi in Pakistan waters from Feb 11 to 16 2021.
• The tag line for AMAN 2021 would be “Together for Peace”.

Together for Peace

• Pakistan Navy’s Aman 2021 exercise under the motto ‘Together for Peace’ aims to strengthen and develop naval cooperation among the world navies to promote regional stability and counter maritime threats.
• It offers the participating countries a chance to “work together keeping differences aside to defeat common adversaries” and hybrid warfare such as terrorism, piracy, drugs and arms trafficking, human smuggling, climate change.

Background

• Pakistan Navy initiated the exercise in 2007 with only three participants, since then its conducted every two years.
  • Pakistan’s message of collaborative maritime security is being widely accepted and the participation has greatly expanded.
  • AMAN 2019 saw as many as 46 countries and 115 observers naval exercises. 11 navies participated with their warships.

• Aman 2021 exercise will be attended by around 45 nations which includes participating fleets from
  • US, China, Russia, UK, Turkey, Iran, Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries from ASEAN, South Asia, African Union, EU, GCC and NATO.

Features of Aman 2021

• Aman-2021 will have two phases
  • Harbour phase
  • Sea phase
• Harbour activities would include seminars, discussions, demonstrations and international get-togethers, while the sea phase would demonstrate tactical manoeuvres on anti-piracy, counterterrorism, gunnery firing and search and rescue missions.
• Sea phase would be the international fleet review, which will be witnessed by national and foreign dignitaries from one of Pakistan Navy’s bigger ships.

  • The AMAN exercise is an enabler for Pakistan Navy’s ambitions of transforming into a blue water force.
  • Maritime security for Pakistan has gained unique geostrategic importance due to the development of the new Gwadar Port under the multi-billion dollar China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
    • Gwadar port strategically located close to the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most important oil transit chokepoint, and connects three regions South Asia, Middle East and Central Asia.
