NCRB Report 2021: Major Findings
I. Crime against women in NCRB Report 2021
*(number of incidents per 1 lakh population)
- Increased from 56.5 per cent in 2020 to 64.5 per cent in 2021 as per NCRB Report 2021
- Cruelty by husband or his relatives: 31.8%
- Assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty: 20.8 %
- Kidnapping and abduction: 17.6%
- Rape: 7.4%
Maximum among states: Rajasthan, Odisha, Assam
Among UTs: Delhi
II. Suicides in NCRB Report 2021 (IPC 309)
- At the national level, the number of suicides increased by 7.17% from 2020 to 2021 as per NCRB Report 2021
- Daily wage earners (25.6% of total suicides)
- House wives (14.1% of total suicides)
- Students (8% of total suicides)
- Persons engaged in farming sector (6.6% of total suicides)
Maximum among states: Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh
Major reasons: drug abuse and alcohol addiction, bankruptcy or indebtedness, unemployment, marriage-related issues, failure in examination, mental disorders, family problems, sense of isolation, violence etc.
III. Road Accidents in NCRB Report 2021
- Deaths by accidents on roads increased by almost 17% in 2021 compared to 2020 as per NCRB Report 2021
- An increase in the rate of deaths per 1,000 vehicles in India was seen.
- Two-wheelers (44.5% of deaths)
- Buses (3% of deaths)
Maximum among states: Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra
Major causes: Speeding (approx. 50% of cases), dangerous and careless driving
IV. Crime against Children in NCRB Report 2021
- A 16% jump in cognisable crimes against children in 2021 compared to the previous year, rate of crime, number of crimes committed per lakh population, increased from 24.3% to 29.2% as per NCRB Report 2021
- Kidnapping and abduction: 45%
- Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO): 36%
- Other Crimes include rape and murder, abetment to suicide, trafficking, Child labour etc.
Maximum among states: Madhya Pradesh, UP, Maharashtra (Sikkim has highest rate of crime)
V. NDPS Act in NCRB Report 2021
- Punjab tops the list with 32.8 per cent crime rate (per lakh population) in 2021 as per NCRB Report 2021
- Himachal Pradesh registered second highest crime rate at 20.8 per cent.
Other major states: Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Uttarakhand
VI. Sedition cases in NCRB Report 2021
- In all,149 offences against State, under various Sections of IPC, were reported in 2021, lower than 172 cases reported in 2020 as per NCRB Report 2021
- IPC Section 124A: 76 cases registered
- Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act [UAPA]: 1604 arrests
- Special & Local Laws (SLL)
- Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act
- Official Secret Act: 55 cases reported
