Appointment

After the Kargil War ended, the Kargil Review Committee suggested creating the position of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). Both the Lieutenant General D.B. Shekatkar Committee (2016) and the Naresh Chandra task group (2012) had advocated the position of Chief of Defence Staff.

Eligibility

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) position has a 65-year-old age restriction. Prior to then, only a four-star officer was qualified.

The government changed the Army, Navy, and Air Force service rules to make retired Service Chiefs and officers with three stars eligible for the position of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). On the date of appointment, the retired officer shall not have turned 62 years old.

Tenure

A maximum of 65 years may be added to the term of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).

Functions

The CDS would serve as the Chiefs of Staff Committee’s Permanent Chairman and Principal Military Advisor to the Defense Minister (COSC). He will serve as the government of India and the Prime Minister of India’s government’s sole military advisor. In the newly established Department of Military Affairs (DMA) inside the Ministry of Defense, the CDS will serve as Secretary (MoD). Standardizing weapons procurement processes and integrating Army, Air Force, and Navy operations will be the Chief of Defense Staff’s (CDS) responsibility.

Lt General Anil Chauhan: New CDS of India

As the new Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Anil Chauhan has assumed leadership. He will take over as India’s CDS from the late Gen. Bipin Rawat. A three-star commander has never before in the history of the Indian Army been appointed Chief of Defence Staff, the highest rank a member of the armed forces may hold, after coming out of retirement.

New CDS of India: Lt Gen Anil Chauhan, who was born on May 18, 1961, enlisted in the Indian Army’s 11 Gorkha Rifles in 1981. He received his education at the National Defense Academy in Khadakwasla as well as the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. Over the course of his 40-year career, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan held a number of commands, staff roles, significant appointments, and more.

In honour of his distinguished military service, General Anil Chauhan (Retired) was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, the Vishisht Seva Medal, and the Sena Medal. He is Chauhan, a 61-year-old decorated Army officer and authority in China.

He was the Army’s Director General of Military Operations in 2019 when Indian aircraft targeted a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training facility deep within Pakistan in retribution for the Pulwama terror attack (DGMO). As India’s second Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. Chauhan (ret.) assumes charge and becomes a four-star general (CDS). Among retiring three-star officers, he will become a four-star officer for the first time.

New Chief of Defence Staff Lt General Anil Chauhan: Career

He was in charge of an Infantry Division in the Baramulla region as a Major General in the Northern Command. Before taking over as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command two years ago in September 2019, the man in the North East first served as the man in the North East before moving on to command a corps as a Lt. General. He then entered into retirement in May 2021.

One of his other key staff assignments was Director General of Military Operations. He additionally took part in the UN mission in Angola. He retired from the Indian Army on May 31, 2021. His excitement for national security and strategic concerns did not diminish after he left the Army, and he continued to be involved in these topics.

New CDS of India: Past Designations

Since his retirement as the commander of the Eastern Army last year, retired Lt. General Anil Chauhan has been employed as the military adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat by NSA Ajit Doval. The officer had previously served in Angola with a UN mission.

The government’s ambitious plan to establish theatre commands that will ensure tri-service cooperation will be tough for Lt Gen Chauhan (retd) to carry out in his capacity as CDS.
