POINT TO NOTE

  • Interest in Hindi and some other Indian languages such as Tamil and Bengali has been increasing in China in recent years as Chinese investments are growing in various states of India.
  • Currently around 400 students learn Hindi as a subject in about 16 universities across China, said Prof Jiang Jingkui, the Head of the Centre for South Asian Studies at Peking University in Beijing.

IN 2017 LANGUAGE MOUWAS SIGNED

  • India and China today signed an agreement to extend the term of Hindi language course functioning at a leading Chinese University since 2012.
  • The MoU was signed by Consul General of Shanghai Consulate Prakash Gupta,onbehalf of Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) President Cao Deming in Shanghai.
  • The initial MoU was signed on October 29, 2012 for a period of five years by (then) Ambassador of India to China and Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar and SISU Executive Vice President Feng Qinghua.

THE LANGUAGE DILEMMA

  • Chinese students know India is a vast market. In Terms of PPP it is the third largest economy in the world. In the future many Chinese businesses and professionals would want to work in India
