NEW VIRUS

CHINA HAS A MAJOR PROBLEM

• The Asian Flu in 1956 killed between one and four million people worldwide. SARS in 2002 infected 8,098 and killed 774 in seventeen counties. H7N9 emerged ten years later to strike at least 1,223 people and kill four out of every ten of them.

NEW VIRUS

• More than 37 people in East China’s Jiangsu Province contracted with the SFTS Virus in the first half of the year. Later, 23 people were found to have been infected in East China”sAnhui province, state-run Global Times quoted media reports.

SFTS

• Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS)
• A woman from Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu, who suffered from the virus showed onset of symptoms such as fever, coughing. Doctors found a decline of leukocyte, blood platelet inside of her body. After a month of treatment, she was discharged from the hospital.
• At least seven people have died in Anhui and East China”sZhejiang province due to the virus, the report said.

TICK-BORNE STFS VIRUS

• Ticks are external parasites, living by feeding on the blood of mammals, birds, and sometimes reptiles and amphibians.
• Ticks are small insects that bite humans and can often transmit disease.

NOTES

• SFTS Virus is not a new virus. China has isolated pathogen of the virus in 2011, and it belongs to the Bunyavirus category.
• Virologists believe that the infection may have been passed on to humans by ticks and that the virus can be transmitted between humans, it said.
• Sheng Jifang, a doctor from the first affiliated hospital under Zhejiang University, said that the possibility of human-to-human transmission could not be excluded; patients can pass the virus to others via blood or mucous.

DANGEROUS

• SFTS is an emerging infectious disease that was first described in northeast and central China and now has also been discovered in Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan.
• SFTS has a fatality rate of 12% and as high as 30% in some areas. The major clinical symptoms of SFTS are fever, vomiting, diarrhea, multiple organ failure, thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), leukopenia (low white blood cell count) and elevated liver enzyme levels.

WHY IS THE SFTS VIRUS A MATTER OF CONCERN?

• Various studies have been done to determine the mode of infection and ways of transmission of the virus but no vaccine has been developed yet. The SFTS virus is known to severely affect elderly people of age 50 years and above and also those with a weak immune system.
